CHAMA Cha Mapinduzi(이하 CCM)의 총재인 Abdulrahman Kinana

KinanaCoast Region

Tanzania: Union Haters Learn From Scottish Vote

Kibaha CHAMA Cha Mapinduzi (CCM) Secretary General, Mr Abdulrahman Kinana, has said that the failure of campaigners who had been pushing for Scotland's separation from the United Kingdom should be a lesson to politicians in Tanzania, who think they already have the mandate to make decisions on behalf of the public.

Giving his opinion during a public rally in Coast Region, on the results of a referendum wherein Scottish people voted "No" to the envisaged separation, Mr Kinana said the reasons are similar to those of the Tanganyika and Zanzibar union.

He said that it is imperative for Tanzanian members of the public to learn from the Scotland case that the challenges that arise from the prevalence of the union should be discussed amicably instead of hurriedly or acrimoniously.

"This issue of Scotland has taught us a great lesson. We have learned that it is a good idea to remain in the union and that politicians have no right to attempt to influence the decisions of members of the public," he said.

Mr Kinana said that during the campaigning period, shortly before the referendum was conducted, Scotland's First Minister Alex Salmond, had urged members of the public to accept the envisaged separation from the United Kingdom.

"Many people thought that Scotland would, certainly, separate from the UK. However, during the referendum, the pubic voted differently. This should be a lesson to us.

We should learn that politicians should not make decisions on behalf of the public," he noted. He said that the public should be very careful because there are challenges that are legitimate and those that have been created by politicians.

He stressed that dialogue should be the best way forward. Mr Kinana added that every union has its challenges and the best solution is not likely to be separation but in-depth discussions that would culminate in sustainable solutions for the benefit of the nation.

"It has never happened before that 85 per cent of Scottish people vote to agree on the separation issue. This shows that people prefer to be in a union for stability," he explained.

He cited other examples of areas that had tried separation but were blocked by public opinion as Credo and Canada. He said that Tanzanians who are still talking about the separation of Tanganyika and Zanzibar should learn from the Scotland and UK case whose union has lasted 307 years. "Our union has lasted only 50 years so far.

Our colleagues in the United Kingdom have been in their union for more than 300 years. And the public has refused the proposed separation because they have seen the benefits that emanate from the Union," he added.

Earlier, the CCM Secretary of Ideology and Publicity, Mr Nape Nnauye, said the results of Scotland's referendum have shown that the union of Tanzania will continue to prosper.

"The Scotland's outcome has shut up the mouths of those fighting for the Tanganyika and Zanzibar separation. They wanted to use the results to build their case for our separation, but things have turned out differently. This shows globally that people prefer unity," he added.

On 18 September, this year, voters in Scotland were asked to answer Yes or No in a referendum whether they want the nation to become independent from the rest of the United Kingdom.

The Scottish government, led by First Minister Salmond, urged members of the public to vote 'Yes' saying the 300-yearold union is no longer of much benefit and that an independent Scotland, aided by its oil wealth, would be one of the world's richest countries.

He says it's time for Scotland to take charge of its own destiny, free from what he describes as the 'shackles' of a London-based UK Parliament.

Failure to secure the first minister has declared that he will stand down as Scotland's first minister and the leader of the Scottish National party after failing to secure a majority for independence, according to International media.
