​케냐인들이 기억하는 Westgate 쇼핑몰 테러

​

케냐는 정확히 1년 전, 67명의 사상자가 발생한 Westgate 쇼핑몰 테러를 잊지 못하고 있다.

​

 Westgate 추모식은 Karura Forest에서 진행되었으며,

희생자들의 이름이 새겨진 명판이 생존자, 희생자들의 친구들과 가족들을 포함한 2,500여명 앞에서 세워졌다.

​

이 테러는 알 카에다와 연결된 알 샤바브(Al Shabaab) 무장단체의 소행이었다.

​훗날 이들은 케냐 군대가 계속해서 무법의 상태인 소말리아, 즉 그들의 조국에 거주하는 것에 대한 보복이라고 말했다.

​

추모식은 가족들, 친구들, 그리고 케냐의 가장 어두웠던 날을 기억하고자 하는 사람들이 있는 케냐 각지에서 열렸다.

Uhuru Kenyatta 대통령은 추모식에서 그들은 우리 곁에 영원히 함께 할 것이라고 말했다.

“우리는 가장 평범한 시간에 가장 일상적인 장소에서 상상할 수 없는 공포와 이루 말할 수 없는 악을 배웠고

참을 수 없는 고통이 다가와 우리를 황폐화시켰습니다."라고 Kenyatta 대통령은 말했다.

Kenyatta 대통령은 그 지역에 평화와 안정이 복구 될 때까지 케냐의 방어군을 소말리아에 주둔시킬 것이라고 밝혔다. 케냐 군대, UN 소속의 아프리카 연합 군사들과 싸우고 있는 알 샤바브는 군대를 철수 시킬 때까지 계속해서 케냐에 위협을 가할 것으로 보인다.

Kenya: Tears As Kenyans Remember Westgate Attack

KENYA remained on very high alert yesterday as the country remembered the 67 people killed in the Westgate Mall attack, a year ago to the day. A Westgate memorial service was held in Karura Forest, where a plaque bearing the names of the victims was unveiled in front of close to 2,500 survivors, friends and relatives of those who were killed.

 

The attack was perpetrated by al Qaeda-linked al Shabaab militants who later said it was in retaliation for the continued stay of Kenya's military in lawless Somalia, their homeland.

 

Memorial services were held in various parts of the country where families and friends of the departed congregated to honour them and recall one of Kenya's darkest days, which President Uhuru Kenyatta said will live with us forever, in his commemoration message published in a local daily.

 

"We learnt that unimaginable horror, unspeakable evil and intolerable pain can accost and devastate us at the most ordinary times and in the most mundane places," President Kenyatta said in the opinion/editorial article.

 

President Kenyatta said that the Kenya Defence Forces will remain in Somalia until peace and stability are restored to the region. Al Shabaab, which is fighting Kenyan and other African soldiers who are part of a UN-mandated African Union force in Somalia, has repeatedly threatened more attacks on Kenyan soil if this country does not withdraw its troops.
